The Story

A river otter raises its head clear of the water and looks straight up at the lens, whiskers dripping, its face bright against the rippled surface. Just behind it, an arched back breaks the water as the animal moves. The low angle puts the viewer right at the waterline, level with its gaze.

The Location

River otters travel the Chesapeake's tidal creeks and rivers in family groups, surfacing to check their surroundings before diving again. A face-to-face look like this comes from staying low and letting the otter approach on its own terms.

Artist's Perspective

Connection is the theme Chris Michael keeps returning to, the moment a wild animal turns and acknowledges you. He describes this kind of encounter as a river otter unsure of what is sitting on the river bank, and it is exactly the candid, eye-level meeting that his documentary approach is built to catch.
