The Location

The tidal marshes of the Chesapeake Bay are among the most productive ecosystems on the Atlantic coast. These grasses — Spartina, Phragmites, and cordgrass — filter the Bay's waters, shelter juvenile fish and crabs, and define the shoreline that has sustained watermen and wildlife for centuries.

"The wind was ripping through the marsh grass and ruffling every feather on this heron, but it didn't move. That resilience — standing your ground while everything around you bends — is what defines these birds. I shot through the grass deliberately to create a sense of being hidden, watching." — Ryan Lott
