The Story

A subadult bald eagle banks through clear sky, wings stretched to their full seven-foot span. The white head and tail are nearly complete — a few brown streaks remain, the last traces of four years of juvenile plumage. The talons are tucked, the eye level with the horizon. This bird is at the threshold of adulthood.

The Location

The Chesapeake Bay watershed holds one of the densest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the contiguous United States. The Chesapeake Bay Program estimates more than 1,000 nesting pairs along the Bay and its tributaries — a recovery that took four decades and began with the federal DDT ban in 1972. Eagles were listed as endangered in the lower 48 states in 1967; the population in Virginia had collapsed to fewer than 75 nesting pairs by 1970. Today they are a fixture of the Bay's shorelines from the Susquehanna Flats to the James River.
