The Story

An osprey wheels overhead, wings thrown into a deep V, and for a single beat it turns its head and looks straight down the lens. The stare is unmistakable — gold iris, the dark bandit's mask, the barred tail fanned against a wash of open sky. The Location

Few birds embody the Chesapeake like the osprey. Each spring they return to the Bay's rivers, marshes, and channel markers by the thousands, one of the largest breeding populations on Earth, to fish the shallows and raise their young on stick nests above the water. To watch one hunt the tidal flats is to watch the estuary's recovery written in a single silhouette.
