Artist's Perspective

"I approached this shot not as a wildlife photo, but as a formal portrait. I wanted to isolate the bird from the visual clutter of the boats and ropes. By using a long lens and a wide aperture, I was able to render the background into soft distinct shapes, giving the heron the same separation and importance you would expect in a human studio portrait." — Ryan Lott
