The Story

The Cooper's Hawk does its best work in the half-second you weren't paying attention. It threads through canopy at full speed, pulls a songbird out of a feeder flock before any of them can react, and is gone before you're sure what you saw. But there are the moments between — the watchful stillness on a bare branch, yellow-orange eyes scanning downward with the patience of something that does not need to hurry because it has never once missed for lack of effort. Smith found this bird in that mode: coiled stillness, complete attention, the streaked breast and barred tail that are field marks as much as any color.

The Location

Cooper's Hawks breed throughout the Chesapeake watershed in mixed woodland and forest edge — the exact habitat that has expanded as suburban tree canopy has matured. They are more common today than they were fifty years ago, and the well-stocked backyard bird feeder is, to a Cooper's Hawk, simply an aggregation of prey. Their winter numbers increase further as northern birds move into the region. They are not charismatic in the way eagles are charismatic. They are precise.

Artist's Perspective

"Accipiters are the most underrated hawks to photograph. People see the big buteos and go after those, but the Cooper's has this focused intensity that's different from anything else. It sat there for maybe four minutes and never looked away from whatever it was tracking. I didn't move either." — Andre Smith

Curator's Recommendation

A striking vertical portrait in the naturalistic bokeh style that isolates the subject beautifully. The neutral winter tones give this piece exceptional versatility — it works in almost any interior setting. An excellent complement to the eagle and mockingbird pieces for a cohesive woodland-and-waterway collection.
