Swan Sunset

The Story

A swan glides low across the water while the sun sits huge and white just above a wall of marsh reeds, flooding the whole frame with red and orange. The bird reads as a pale silhouette on the burning surface, its reflection stretched below it. A bare tree leans in from the right edge, framing the last of the light before the sun slips behind the grass.

The Location

The Chesapeake's tidal marshes throw their strongest color at the end of the day, when the low sun turns the water and the reeds to fire. Swans work these quiet edges, and a still evening like this holds the color for only a few minutes.

Artist's Perspective

Chris Michael returns to the pinks, purples, and oranges of a sun setting over a quiet marsh as one of the ways the region shows up in his work. Here he set the swan small against the light so the color and the calm carry equal weight.
