The Story

If one painting could stand as Shubert's credential as a natural history painter, it might be this one. The striped bass is rendered in perfect profile against a pale ground, every scale and fin in its proper place, the seven lateral stripes running cleanly from gill to tail. But this is not merely illustration — the body has weight, the flanks have the particular silver that shifts toward olive at the back, and the slight forward lean of the open jaw gives the fish a sense of purpose. This is the rockfish in its full authority.

The Location

Striped bass have shaped the Chesapeake Bay's human history as much as any species. They fed colonial settlements, drove commercial fisheries for three centuries, nearly collapsed in the 1980s, recovered through one of the most successful stock rebuilding programs in American conservation history, and continue to define the Bay's identity as a fishing destination. The classic profile Shubert depicts is the fish that every angler on the Atlantic coast knows by sight.

Artist's Perspective

"Based on a nearly 40-inch specimen caught in spring, displaying iridescent lavender and blue stripes with reflective gold scales on a dark green back." — Marty Shubert

Curator's Recommendation

The essential Chesapeake fish portrait. Works as a standalone statement in any room and as the centerpiece of a Shubert fish portrait series. Particularly effective in dining rooms, great rooms, and library or study settings where you want a painting that signals both regional authenticity and artistic seriousness. A natural complement to The Chase for collectors who want the full range of Shubert's rockfish work.

Print Quality

Archival-Quality Canvas. Made in the USA with globally sourced materials.

Every Chesapeake Focus print is produced on archival-grade poly-cotton canvas using UL GREENGUARD GOLD certified inks — water resistant, fade resistant, and anti-yellowing. Each canvas is hand-stretched over kiln-dried stretcher bars that are knot-free and warp-free, then finished with your choice of hardwood floater frame in matte black, white, brown, or natural. Ready to hang right out of the box.

Stretcher bars sourced from FSC-certified, sustainably managed forests — a quiet nod to the landscapes our work celebrates.
