The Story
Shubert's red drum is a study in controlled mastery. Every scale catches the light differently — bronze and copper along the back, solid white at the belly — and the characteristic tail spot is rendered with the quiet confidence of a signature. This is not the casual fish you catch on a weekend. This is the fish in its full dignity, isolated against cool gray, every fin and lateral line accounted for. Taxonomically correct detailing makes this a field museum study. These are bulldog fighters that make them one of the top targets for light-tackle anglers.
The Location
Red drum — channel bass, redfish — are a Bay staple, running the lower tributaries and inlets of the Chesapeake in autumn. They are the fish that watermen and recreational anglers alike pursue along the seaside marshes of the Eastern Shore, in the lower Bay's shoals, and in the tidal creeks of the Virginia coast. They can be found nosing through the shallow marsh-grasses looking for crustaceans such as shrimp or fiddler crab or small baitfish. As they become larger, they can be found in large schools out in deeper water where they will feed on larger baitfish. A large school can look like a copper disc under the waves and get the fisherman’s adrenaline flowing.
Artist's Perspective
"A 'puppy drum' in typical harvesting slot range, found in the marshes. Features the copper-penny reflective sheen and blue coloring in the caudal fin from blue-green algae consumption." — Marty Shubert
Curator's Recommendation
Works beautifully with the Speckled Trout painting that is similarly sized with the same gray background. This is purposeful since both these species share the same marshes and tributaries around the bay.
Print Quality
Archival-Quality Canvas. Made in the USA with globally sourced materials.
Every Chesapeake Focus print is produced on archival-grade poly-cotton canvas using UL GREENGUARD GOLD certified inks — water resistant, fade resistant, and anti-yellowing. Each canvas is hand-stretched over kiln-dried stretcher bars that are knot-free and warp-free, then finished with your choice of hardwood floater frame in matte black, white, brown, or natural. Ready to hang right out of the box.
