Rainy Day Heron

The Story

A great blue heron stands on a rusted mooring piling in the rain, head tucked back to preen along its shoulder. The long plume feathers hang loose and wet, and the iron ring and weathered wood below ground the bird in a working waterfront. Rain streaks the dark background, wrapping the whole scene in gray and giving the heron a private, self-contained calm.

The Location

Great blue herons hold the Chesapeake's shorelines through every kind of weather, hunting the shallows and resting on pilings and docks. A wet, low-light day like this one strips the color back to the bird's own blues and grays.
