The Story
There is no more violent grace in the Chesapeake watershed than an osprey in its final descent. Shubert has frozen the exact moment of impact — talons locked on a writhing fish, water exploding outward, wings cupped against the sky in a posture that is equal parts predator and athlete. The detail is extraordinary: individual feathers bend against the force of the strike, the fish flashes silver against the dark water, and the osprey's fierce amber eye is locked forward. This is not a bird in flight. This is a bird at work.
The Location
Ospreys nest and hunt throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed — on channel markers, dead snags, and purpose-built platforms from the upper Bay down through the tidal rivers of the Eastern Shore. Their populations collapsed with DDT and rebounded dramatically after its ban, and today the osprey is one of the great conservation success stories of the region. Where the Bay is healthy, ospreys are present. Their return each spring is as reliable as the rockfish run.
Artist's Perspective
"The picture captures that moment when the osprey extracts itself from the water with its oversized wings, while hanging on to the fish with its initial grip. It will then shake its wings, similar to a dog, to shed the last vestiges of water, and then adjust its grip on the fish to streamline it for forward flight. Always a fascinating to watch this study in natural aerodynamics. " — Marty Shubert
Curator's Recommendation
The background colors are purposefully brown and blue for better integration into décor. (As an example: the original went into a home as a great room counterpoint to a stone fireplace that incorporated walnut shelving)
Print Quality
Archival-Quality Canvas. Made in the USA with globally sourced materials.
Every Chesapeake Focus print is produced on archival-grade poly-cotton canvas using UL GREENGUARD GOLD certified inks — water resistant, fade resistant, and anti-yellowing. Each canvas is hand-stretched over kiln-dried stretcher bars that are knot-free and warp-free, then finished with your choice of hardwood floater frame in matte black, white, brown, or natural. Ready to hang right out of the box.
Stretcher bars sourced from FSC-certified, sustainably managed forests — a quiet nod to the landscapes our work celebrates.
