Longtail Sunrise

The Story

A duck hangs just above the water with wings thrown wide, its dark shape set against a sheet of molten orange. Behind it a low tree line runs across the top of the frame, softened by morning mist rising off the surface. The whole scene is reduced to silhouette and warm light, the bird held for a moment against the glow.

The Location

Sunrise on the Chesapeake turns the tidal water to copper, and wintering ducks move at first light between resting and feeding water. A moment like this happens fast, framed by the color for only a few minutes each morning.

Artist's Perspective

Chris Michael spends his mornings out on the water while most people are still driving past, and that time is what puts him in place for a moment like this. He worked the light here to let the bird read as pure gesture against the glow.
