The Story

A drake long-tailed duck sits low on the water toward the right of the frame, its slender tail feathers lifted in a fine dark line. The rest of the image is nearly empty, a soft wash of cream and pale gray where the winter light flattens the water and sky into one glowing field. The bird holds the eye precisely because it has so much open space around it.

The Location

Long-tailed ducks winter on the open Chesapeake, riding the cold water in loose rafts before heading back north to breed. Catching one alone on a still, bright morning is a matter of patience and calm conditions.
