Heron Sunset

The Story

A great blue heron stands on the bare limb of a tall pine, its long neck and legs drawn into a clean silhouette against a smoky orange sky. The tree fills the left side of the frame in dark, tangled branches, and the open wash of color to the right leaves the bird room to breathe. The whole scene is stripped to shape and glow, quiet and still at the end of the day.

The Location

Great blue herons roost in tall shoreline pines along the Chesapeake, settling in as the light fades. A hazy evening turns the sky to a single warm field and reduces the roosting bird to outline.

Artist's Perspective

Chris Michael works the last light of the day for its color and calm, letting a familiar bird become a graphic shape. Here he set the heron small against the sky so the mood carries as much as the subject.
