The Location

The Chesapeake area in winter is a landscape most visitors never see. When temperatures drop below freezing for sustained periods, the spray from waves coats the jetty rocks in thick white ice, transforming the familiar shoreline into something almost arctic — a rare and fleeting version of the Bay and its tributaries. This particular image was taken along the Potomac River.

Artist's Perspective

"Most people never see the Chesapeake in winter — the ice on these jetty rocks only happens during the coldest weeks of January and February. The pastel twilight sky against the white ice creates a color palette most people don't associate with the Bay. That's exactly why I shot it." — Ryan Lott
