The Story

An osprey faces the camera dead-on, both yellow eyes fixed on the viewer beneath the dark bandit's mask. The white breast is flecked with brown, the folded wings frame the body, and the hooked beak sits at the center of a near-perfect symmetry. The look is direct enough that the bird seems to be studying you as closely as you are studying it.

The Location

Ospreys return to the Chesapeake by the thousands each spring to nest on channel markers, pilings, and platforms above the tidal rivers. Few birds are more tied to the Bay, and few will hold a stare like this one.
