Eagle's Pride

The Story

A bald eagle holds the top of a weathered, lichen-covered snag, its white head and tail bright against a wash of pale blue. The bird faces off to the side in a clean profile, the dark body and hooked yellow beak sharp against the open sky. Nothing else competes for the frame, which leaves the eagle reading as a single, upright silhouette of authority.

The Location

The Chesapeake holds one of the densest bald eagle populations in the country, and dead trees along the tidal rivers make favored perches for scanning the water below. A bird at the very tip of a bare limb is a common winter sight on the Bay's shorelines.

Artist's Perspective

Chris Michael photographs wildlife the way he approaches a portrait, letting the subject settle and reveal its character before the shutter falls. Here he kept the composition spare so the eagle's posture carries the whole image.
