The Story

The mockingbird is unimpressed by winter. While other species head south or hunker into survival mode, the mocker stakes out a fruiting holly and defends it with the same territorial ferocity it shows in breeding season. Smith found this one at rest in the moment between songs, perched in a tangle of American holly laden with brilliant red berries. The bird's eye is bright, the gray and white plumage crisp against the purple-gray winter sky. It is not a scene of hardship but of winter prosperity — a bird that has found exactly what it needed and intends to keep it.

The Location

American holly and Northern Mockingbirds are both year-round residents of the Chesapeake watershed, and the relationship between them is a cold-weather staple. The mocker's winter diet pivots to berries — holly, bayberry, eastern red cedar — and a heavily loaded holly tree in December is as contested a resource as a feeding station. The Chesapeake's mild winters compared to inland areas mean these birds have one of the longest singing seasons anywhere on the East Coast. A mockingbird in a holly tree in January is the Bay country's answer to a Christmas card.

Artist's Perspective

"Mockingbirds are everywhere, but they're hard to photograph well because they don't hold still. This one was guarding this particular holly tree and when it landed for a second, the composition just happened — the berries, the sky, the bird looking up. That's what you wait for." — Andre Smith

Curator's Recommendation

A horizontal format with warm holiday tones that translates beautifully to canvas. The bright red of the holly berries against the winter sky gives this piece exceptional visual impact at any scale. Works in living rooms, dining rooms, and anywhere you want the Chesapeake's backyard charm.
