The Story

A diving duck has nearly vanished beneath the surface. All that remains above the waterline is the point of its tail and the white edges of its half-folded wings, with a thin arc of water flung up and hanging in the still air. The morning is so calm that the whole moment repeats in the reflection below, the ripple ring is the only sign that a bird was ever here.

The Location

Winter brings diving ducks to the Chesapeake's quiet shallows, where they work the cold water for food on mornings when the surface goes to glass. A scene like this lasts a fraction of a second before the rings spread and the water closes over.

Artist's Perspective

Chris Michael works in a documentary style, waiting on the water for candid moments that most people pass by. This frame is built on split-second timing, the shutter finding the one instant the dive reads as pure shape and reflection.
