The Story
Every summer on the Bay, a blue crab ends up on a dock. It crawls from the trap, or scrambles from the bushel, and for a moment it faces you β claws elevated, eyestalks tracking, ready to defend territory it has no claim to. Shubert has painted this moment with affection and precision. The crab fills the canvas, its turquoise-tipped claws vivid against the grain of sun-bleached dock planking. The carapace catches the light in greens and olives. It is simultaneously an object of beauty and a reminder that the Bay's most iconic creature does not back down.
The Location
The blue crab is the Chesapeake Bay's signature species β the animal that more than any other defines the region's culture, economy, and identity. From the watermen hauling pots in the pre-dawn dark to the steamed crab houses along every tidal creek, Callinectes sapidus β the beautiful savory swimmer β has shaped life on the Bay for centuries. The dock setting here is universal: every waterman's wharf, every marina on the Eastern Shore.
Artist's Perspective
"A second rendition of a male blue crab from a different angle. "The #1 Jimmy typically has a darker, older looking shell." This particular crab came from my crab pot before a family feast." β Marty Shubert
Curator's Recommendation
The definitive blue crab painting for a Bay-focused collection. Bold enough to stand alone above a fireplace or as the anchor of a dining room gallery wall. The square-adjacent 4:5 format sits comfortably in spaces where a traditional horizontal landscape would feel too passive. A natural conversation piece for anyone with a connection to the Bay.
