The Story

Every summer on the Bay, a blue crab ends up on a dock. It crawls from the trap, or scrambles from the bushel, and for a moment it faces you — claws elevated, eyestalks tracking, ready to defend territory it has no claim to. Shubert has painted this moment with affection and precision. The crab fills the canvas, its turquoise-tipped claws vivid against the grain of sun-bleached dock planking.
